Legendary Florida Exhibit
My community and its history really fascinate me so I always take advantage of opportunities to learn more. A friend recommended the Legendary Florida exhibit at the historic county courthouse in DeLand so I decided to check it out. It was my first time in the courthouse and I was in awe of the huge stained glass dome and the marble rotunda where the exhibit is located. The exhibit consists of 18 oil paintings on two levels of the courthouse by well known artist Jackson Walker. Read more… Each one has its own story to tell about people and events that helped form the state of Florida. I took at least several minutes in front of each painting trying to take in all the details and reading the information plaques. Number 15, Orange Fritters and a Story really stood out to me. It featured author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings at her Cross Creek home and credits her for bringing "Florida Cracker" heritage to the world through her books. I was so intrigued with the orange fritters that I went online looking for a recipe and found one I am going to try. While at the courthouse, I took a moment to peek into the old courtroom upstairs. It was like stepping back in time with all the intricately carved wood and original fixtures that date way back. It was easy to imagine some of the drama that unfolded there in the early days when Volusia County was an untamed frontier with less than scrupulous characters ruling politics! I have already made plans to bring my kids after school one day to see the exhibit so they can learn a few things about Florida's founding. ![]() Paris Pena Deltona ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
